Former Folk Art Museum Chairman Sentenced to Six Years in Prison for Rampant Fraud
It's been a tough few months for the American Folk Art Museum . In May, the ailing institution was forced to sell its West 53rd Street flagship building to the Museum of Modern Art in an effort to pay off its debts. Now, the man who led the charge to construct that flagship building, former board chairman and jeweler Ralph Esmerian , has been sentenced to six years in federal prison for bankruptcy, wire fraud, and concealing assets.
The charges had nothing to do with his dealings with the museum, though he committed most of his crimes while serving as board chairman, and left the post due to his mounting legal and financial troubles. The fourth-generation jeweler was found guilty of double-pledging $40 million in collateral to secure $217 million in loans, which he used to finance his business.

Oh Boy. This ring is just spectacular. From the color and cut of this delicious, warm and sunny citrine to it’s lace-work surround of white and champagne diamonds and scalloped gold mounting, the presence of this ring on the hand is nothing short of spectacular. When we look back at movie stars of the 30′s and 40′s and wonder “where did the glamour go?”, well, it’s right here. Carlo Viani fine jewelry in gold and gems is no longer widely available. Like everyone else, they’re trying to figure out how to do incredible jewels for all of us – at $1,600 per ounce for gold. This piece was purchased in 2005 and vaulted. So it’s selling pretty close to what it cost over 7 years ago. I checked out their site, and nothing of this gem weight was available for under $2,000. The ring is extremely on trend – with all the mags showing large presence rings – but they’re all mystery metal and glass or plastic. These are real gems, real gold at a price from half a decade ago. This is fine jewelry. Citrine is a surprisingly versatile stone, basically a neutral, which can be worn as easily with brown tweeds and woolens, as with a little black dress or white jeans and a pretty top in summer. Mounted in polished 14K gold, the ring features one honey-drenched emerald-cut 13 x 18mm citrine. It also features 46 round cut diamonds in rhodium plated bead settings and 14 round-cut champagne diamonds in prong settings. The total citrine weight is 17.19ct, diamond weight is 0.25ct and champagne diamond weight is 0.54ct (all approximate). The diamond color is H and the clarity is SI. The setting size is 1″ x 13/16″ with a height of 7/16″. The total gem weight comes in at a glorious 17.98 (18) cttw. The ring has an undergallery.
