CRESWELL — Gresham businessman Jim Pliska will again try to become only the third man ever to win titles in both the open and senior division when the 59th Oregon Golf Association Men’s Stroke Play Championship begins Aug. 12 at Emerald Valley Golf Club
Pliska, who finished 21st in the three-day, 54-hole event last year, will not be favored to win.
But he should be a crowd favorite among all who golf at Emerald Valley, given his role in rescuing the Creswell course from years of neglect and renovating it into a top competitive venue.
Yes, much has changed since Pliska won the men’s stroke play event at Emerald Valley in 1996.
For one thing, Pliska purchased the golf course. For another, he’s shepherded it through an ongoing series of improvements — more evolutionary than extreme makeover — that made Emerald Valley more difficult and more playable at the same time.
